Note before: This is an old “Diary Entry” from the Modem-Help site, re-jigged into the etmg format. The original site is now long gone.

One of the few things that we surely take to our deaths are our values.

There is a fundamental mistake that most of us make with Value — we adopt value according to “What can it do for me?” This places ourselves at the centre of the Universe. Even a little consideration endorses Copernicus' view that we are merely a part of a vast going-on. This means — if we are not going to shrink our universe to the limits of our skin — that we need to start the building of any value from the view of the thing itself. The question needs to be “What value does it have in itself?”, and this leads to thoughts of where does it come from, what made it, where is it going, does it add to life, will it bring the future closer, and what kind of future?

Seeing children as I got off the bus also reminded me of the difference between having these thoughts as part of mother's milk, and the reality of what we all get fed now.
