I was the goalie for my primary school, even though I was *really* small. My next-door neighbour had been a professional player (or perhaps strong amateur, I do not recall the precise details) and, at my family's request, had spent some time teaching me on the nearby playing field. I was fearless (with the stud-marks on my thighs to show for it) & magic on the ground. However, being so short, all they had to do was lift it over my head. Whoops (though in primary school the goals were smaller).
When I went to Grammar School I immediately put myself forward for the School team as a goalie. The teacher acting as coach took one look at me & dismissed the idea of me as a Goalie out of hand (*far* too short - I did not even get a trial in goal; I was allowed to run around whilst the other lads were given a trial; it was embarrassing).
