Monday, 20 October 2014: a new mural by Banksy appears in Bristol
Tuesday, 21 October 2014: latest mural is vandalised:-
Did you ever get the feeling that someone doesn’t like you?
Dubbed “Pierced Eardrum” (silly name) it is on a wall on a building in Hanover Place, in the city’s Harbourside. Fans of the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer will recognise the similarity to “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (~1665), now also famous as a 2003 film starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson.
This hauntingly-beautiful portrait (above) was purchased in 1881 for two guilders and thirty cents by Arnoldus Andries des Tombe. He donated it in 1902 to the Mauritshuis gallery in The Hague, and it has been there ever since.
