First Property in Pāhoa to feel the touch of Puʻu ʻŌʻō (Monday 10 November 2014)

Just before noon local time on Monday 10 November 2014 the lava from Kīlauea touched the first property in Pāhoa since the current flow began & burnt it to the ground.

The main lava flow is still stopped about 480 feet from Pāhoa Village Road. The flow causing the damage pictured above is a breakout finger just above Cemetery Road. The house has been empty since August. A family member drove over from another part of the island to bear witness to their home's destruction.

The current flow from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent began on June 27 this year and, so far, had only destroyed 2 sheds. Kīlauea's current eruption began in 1983 and had destroyed more than 180 homes between 1983 and 1990, but until this week none had been lost since 2012. The current Puʻu ʻŌʻō outflow shows no sign of stopping.
