Castle Road Car Park, Rayleigh, Essex (in Case You Also Want to Make a Bet)

Stephanie Corder recently put a coin into the parking machine at her home town’s car park at Castle Road in Rayleigh, Essex (costs at the car park range from 50p for an hour to £5 GBP for the whole day). Stephanie often does that, but this day the machine was not to give her a normal result...

I went to pay for my parking but the coin didn’t register properly so I pushed the return button to get it out and try another and a whole cascade of coins poured out.

There was so much I had to keep taking it out and put in in my pocket - it just kept coming out - a bloke behind me said ‘you want to go and play the machines’.

He said I should keep it, but I couldn’t do that - it wasn’t my money so I just walked around to the police station. The lady in there was a bit astonished as well.

The £32 GBP that the machine paid out was forwarded by the police to Rochford District Council, who are responsible for the Castle Road Car Park. In acknowledgement of her honesty, the Council have offered Stephanie an entire day’s parking free of charge. Isn’t that generous of them (not)?

Naturally, the machine’s fault was ‘resolved very quickly’.
