Sir Tim Hunt FRS is a 72 year old Nobel laureate (physiology/medicine, 2001, for his work on how cells divide) and, until recently, an honorary professor with the University College, London (UCL) Faculty of Life Sciences. Then, on June 9 2015, he made the mistake of actually saying exactly what he thought about women in science. In front of a crowd of journalists (it was at the World Conference of Science Journalists in South Korea). He said:
Let me tell you about my trouble with girls.
Three things happen when they are in the lab:
- you fall in love with them
- they fall in love with you
- when you criticise them they cry
It’s only 36 words.
The twiterati went ballistic.
Soon, the collective humour gathered around the hashtag: #distractinglysexy, and it’s *really* good:
Sadly, Sir Tim is no longer an honorary professor with UCL. They sacked him.
