Steve Watson (now 53) answered a BBC advert in 1994 to play the part of the killer in an episode of Crimewatch. It concerned the 1994 murder of Julie Pacey, and Steve was picked because he had a really good resemblance to the e-fit of the killer. In fact, much too good a resemblance:-

Steve lives in Newark, whilst Julie was living in Grantham in 1994; both towns are in Lincolnshire, and are connected by the A1 road.

Julie’s killer has never been found, and in July this year Crimewatch re-broadcast the original recording, asking for further help from the public, hoping that DNA advances since the original broadcast could help identify the killer.

People in Lincolnshire--including the police--are not the sharpest tools in the toolbox, and a couple of folks in Newark fingered Steve to the police, who then demanded Steve’s DNA. He supplied his DNA & explained that he was the actor in the episode, yet even though he was never arrested he is still, even now, waiting to be told that he is no longer a suspect.

And remember, most people never audition for Crimewatch, so you have very little chance of being killed by one of them.

Goodnight, all.
