After that humungous Russian sinkhole that I mailed you about on 5 September I refuse any longer to hear talk of “massive” sinkholes, when all that they are is an over-grown pothole, but this one that opened up at the end of a cul-de-sac (Fontmell Close, St Albans) is a decent size:

A new amenity for Fontmell Close, St Albans - a Hole of your Own - opened up Thursday Oct 1 2015

A Hertfordshire County Council spokesman said:

We were informed about a hole in the footpath last week. It was inspected and barriers put around it on Monday.

Naturally, the local postman fell into the hole, but the spokesman insisted that they planned to fill it in “this morning”. However, at 01:30 BST this morning the Fire Service got a call to say that the hole had opened up some more. It was now 66ft (20m) diameter & 33ft (10m) deep. 5 homes were evacuated and 20 people were taken to a centre set up at the nearby Batchwood Sports Centre.

Now, 52 local homes are without gas, electric or water. Gosh, it's getting serious. Well, at least they have a nice, big hole for the sewerage...
