Folks at the newly-opened IHOP restaurant in Meridian, Mississippi were getting stuck into their pancakes last Saturday 7 November 2015 when, suddenly, there were a series of loud ‘booms’ & all the lights went off. They had to wait for first light the next day to be able to properly see all the devastation that waited for them outside the restaurant...

15 cars in a sinkhole
Carnage (see what I did there?) as the earth eats vehicles outside the IHOP in Meridian, Mississippi, USA

Currently, no-one is certain why a 600 x 50 foot (183 x 15m) hole opened up outside the IHOP ("International House of Pancakes") restaurant, though they do know that it swallowed 15 or so cars. In addition, 254 millimetres of rain has fallen in the previous two weeks, plus the line of the sinkhole leads to a creek. Other local businesses in addition to the IHOP also lost power, although no people were hurt.
